It's easy to view filtered lists of numbers - for example, you can see all your Skype contacts or just those who are online. The latest version has been revamped to take advantage of the iPhone 4's high-resolution display, and the buttons are large and clear. Our favourite aspect of the app is how easy it is to use. But Skype generally offered call quality as good as, or better than, that of other VoIP services we've tested. We found there was noticeable distortion at times, and we occasionally experienced a small delay. The downside is that your call is being squished into a data pipe, so the quality isn't as good as with a normal connection. Anyone with these devices can call anyone else on a compatible.

(You can also make and receive calls outside of a hot spot, but 3G data charges will apply.) And iPhone 4 users can now make video calls to other Skype users who have the app. While there, you can make free Skype-to-Skype calls or calls to landlines at Skype's greatly discounted rates. Why we like it - Instead of swallowing exorbitant charges for international cell-phone calls, just download Skype and point yourself to a Wi-Fi hot spot.
